Finding belonging and community through learning

Each summer, students across Detroit, Michigan come together at local libraries to enrich their music skills at no cost. Summer is a crucial learning period, specifically for underresourced students. The programs run by the Detroit Suzuki Academy of Music provide the stability students need to engage with musical arts studies while building relationships with a reliable, consistent set of adults who are there for them every week.

The focus of the 2026 Race Around the World for Education was to support  the social and emotional learning of children by funding initiatives that strengthen mental health, build coping skills, and foster meaningful connections. Your donations helped fund the 2026 Detroit Suzuki Academy of Music summer programs, which provided 341 contact hours between highly trained educational staff and low-income students in grades one through 12.

“Students were welcomed into a safe, supportive weekly learning environment that gave them opportunities to express themselves, strengthen social bonds with their fellow musicians, and grow in their emotional and musical skills,” said Allison Harris, executive director and lead teacher, Detroit Suzuki Academy of Music.

For some students, these connections become especially important during life’s most difficult moments. One student we’ll call “Arthur” is a powerful example of how music can provide comfort, consistency and a sense of belonging.

Only three months after Arthur started studying the violin through the Detroit Suzuki Academy of Music programs, his mother passed away unexpectedly. Finding comfort and belonging in his violin classes, he has maintained nearly perfect attendance in the four years since his life changed so dramatically. He has formed special bonds with his fellow students and found comfort in learning an instrument.

“We are truly honored to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for Arthur and all 80 of our current students through their grief, their joy, and all that life sends our way,” said Harris.

Thank you to the MREF community for supporting the 2026 Race Around the World for Education and making it possible for us to continue our mission to educate children and youth worldwide. Your support creates opportunities for students like Arthur to find belonging and community through learning.
